Today marked a monumental mile stone for the Reach Out Health Occupations Training (H.O.T.) Program as we placed our very first student in paid work experience. Israel Clayton will be working with Rick McCray of McCray's Diesel Repair & Auto Body on 5th Street in San Bernardino. "My dream job since I was a little kid was to [one day] be a diesel mechanic,” said Israel. Now thanks to Rick McCray and the HOT program, Israel is one step closer to making that dream a reality. Israel joined HOT last year and is simultaneously working on finishing his G.E.D. certificate. This young man has grit - he plans to continue his educational path and will "do whatever it takes for as long as it takes" to realize his goals.
Opportunities for youth like Israel would not be possible without people like show owner Rick McCray. Mr. McCray has owned his own diesel repair shop for many years, and believes that Israel and youth like him deserve a chance. “I’ll treat him like one of my own,” Rick said when agreeing to bring him on. What is most unique about Rick’s business is he focuses on municipal vehicles thus Israel will get a chance to blend his dream with the health industry; working on emergency response vehicles, freightliners, and more.
The partnership is sealed and Israel's success, will pave the way for others to do the same, showing our community that programs like this and funding opportunities like WIOA can work and put young people to work in a career they love! Funding for the HOT program is provided by the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board (WBD). This WIOA Title – 1 financially assisted program or activity, the WBD, are Equal Opportunity Employers. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
